║PREFACE║
╚═══════╝
WHAT IS EZX-WORD?
─────────────────
EZX-WORD is a fast and powerful word processor, easy to learn
and ideal for a laptop computer. You have the option of using
the pull-down menu system or the full set of keyboard commands
for extensive editing and printing features. You can use either
method at any time.
Even if you are new to computer word processing, you should be
able to create and produce a finished document within an hour.
You do not need to learn all of the commands before EZX-WORD can
work for you.
FEATURES OF EZX-WORD
────────────────────
EZX-WORD creates an ASCII character only document that can be
loaded and processed by all of the major word processor programs
as well as by countless text editors. EZX-WORD can also edit
Wordstar (tm) documents. Document size is limited only by the
computer's available memory! This manual was made with
EZX-WORD.
Help is available by pressing the F1 key at any time. The help
screen will display information for the task you are in when you
ask for help. This lets you learn EZX-WORD quickly without
spending time looking up each command in the manual.
Options include choosing your colors for text, background,
highlighted items, marked blocks, colors of the menu and help
screens, and different letter fonts within the document.
EZX-WORD can manage up to six open text windows at once. You
can choose multiple views of the same document, six different
documents, or any combination. You can move or copy text
between windows at the press of a key and you can change the
window size to all or part of the screen. EZX-WORD can display
on screen how your document will look when it is printed with
the margins, paragraph formats, page breaks, margins, and font
characters identified.
The built-in spelling checker can correct the spelling of any
words it does not recognize and can be called up at any time.
You can also create your own "user" dictionary for those special
terms not found in a desk top dictionary.
The built-in macro system lets you create a string of text or
commands that can be called up with a key stroke. An example is
an address or a letter header that is frequently used. You can
also reconfigure the keyboard to use the command keys of your
favorite word processor.
For a laptop computer, or any other limited disk storage system,
the minimum requirement is the EZXW.EXE file. If space permits,
add the dictionary and the help files.

║INSTALLING EZX-WORD║
╚═══════════════════╝
Place #1 Distribution Disk in A: drive (substitute other drive
letter as necessary), and type:
A:README followed by ENTER
Read the instructions on your screen. All the details of
installation will be listed there.
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION NOTES:
1. If EZX-WORD does not run properly:
A. Delete the EZXW.CNF file and try to run again.
B. Your machine may not be totally IBM PC operating
system compatible. This is not always disastrous and a
quick call to our phone support staff may solve your
problem.
C. You may have a slightly incompatible "EGA" card
with auto switch features. Usually, turning off
autoswitch and forcing the system into the EGA mode
solves the problem.
D. If you have any memory resident programs or system
drivers, try running without them loaded in your
computer. On some computers, ANSI.SYS is suspect.
2. If your monitor appears to be losing certain characters or
features, you may have a "color" system with a composite
monochrome (green, amber, LCD, etc.) monitor. Adjust the
contrast and brightness of the monitor until the screen is
readable. In some cases, you may have to go to the OPTIONS Menu
to choose acceptable colors.
3. This Manual is designed to give you a general overview and
familiarity with the program. More complete, up to date
information is available to you through the context sensitive
help (F1) and the online manual. When using the more advanced
features of the program, the help screens will guide you through
the toughest questions with ease. As EZX-WORD continues to add
more features, you can be sure that the online manual and
context sensitive help will give you the guidance needed. This
way everybody wins. We don't spend money continually revising
manuals and charging you higher prices, and you get what you
want and deserve: accurate up to date information. So fire up
the computer, dig in, and welcome to EZX-WORD!
@CP 5
╔═══════════════╗
║GETTING STARTED║
╚═══════════════╝
The commands to run EZX-WORD are found in two places. One is
the easy pull down menu system, and the other is the keyboard
command set summarized toward the end of this manual under
COMMAND KEY SUMMARY. Since both methods are always active, you
can choose to use either one, at any time.
You can start the program in one of three ways:
1. You can enter EZXW at the DOS prompt, and EZX-WORD
will create the document NONAME for you to edit. You
can rename it later on.
2. You can specify one to three file names at one time.
For example,
EZXW A:ONE.TXT
will open the file (or document) called one.txt
located on drive A.
EZXW ONE.TXT TWO.LTR D:\DATA\THREE.TXT
will open three files (each in a text window).
Notice that the example file THREE.TXT is located in
subdirectory \DATA on D: drive and the others are
located in the current directory.
You configure EZX-WORD from the OPTIONS and the EZX-WORD main
menu selections. Configuring lets you have the same margins,
colors, and other options appear each time you start EZX-WORD.
If you don't configure, EZX-WORD will use the default options
built into EZX-WORD.EXE. You can change the options any time
you wish, even while in the middle of editing a document.
See the CONFIGURING EZX-WORD section, for additional
information, such as how to use different configurations for
your special documents.
3. You can also specify a group of files, like this:
EZXW A:*.DOC
This tells EZX-Word to display a list of file names in drive A
matching the file name *.DOC. You can then pick one file to edit
from a directory listing showing all files with the extension of
.DOC.
@CP 5
╔════════════════════╗
║GETTING ON-LINE HELP║
╚════════════════════╝
EZX-WORD provides online, context-sensitive help covering
virtually all of its features when you press the help key, F1.
The term context-sensitive simply means that, when you request
help, the text shown on screen will correspond to the command or
feature you are using.
╔═════════════════════════╗
║ENTERING AND EDITING TEXT║
╚═════════════════════════╝
You enter text like on a typewriter, but you can correct errors,
move words or paragraphs and edit your document until satisfied.
Then, you save it and send it to the printer for a paper copy.
You enter text at the location of the cursor. The cursor is
either in INSERT or OVERWRITE status. In INSERT, any entries
push the text to the right of the cursor to make room for the
new material. In OVERWRITE, the new text writes over any
existing material it finds. You change from one to the other
with the INS key.
You create paragraph breaks by pressing the ENTER key when in
INS status.
Editing lets you correct mistakes, break apart or combine
paragraphs, copy and move text blocks, find and replace text
strings and insert predefined commands or text called "macros".
This powerful tool has made the typewriter obsolete.
╔═══════════════════════════════╗
║MOVING THE CURSOR AND SCROLLING║
╚═══════════════════════════════╝
You are able to move the cursor around the document without
altering the text. The cursor can be moved with a key on the
cursor pad or with a "command key" from the key board.
For example, to move the cursor one character to the right,
press the Right arrow key or Ctrl-D from the keyboard.
The cursor movement choices are:

╔═══════════════╗
║THE MENU SYSTEM║
╚═══════════════╝
You can access most of EZX-WORD's features through the main menu
system. To activate the main menu bar press F10 or ESC. You can
then select a menu item either by using the arrow keys to move
the selection bar to your choice or by pressing the highlighted
capital letter of your choice.
The main menu looks like this at the top of your screen:
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ File Window Text Block Goto Search Options EZX-Word │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Once you've selected an item by pressing the ENTER key, a
pull-down menu will be displayed.
To exit or back out from any of the pull-downs, or the main menu
itself, press the ESC key.
You will notice that several of the option names in the
pull-downs end with two periods (..), which means one of two
things. It means that there is either another pull-down menu
with more choices, or it may mean that you will be prompted for
more information (usually the name of a file).
You will also notice in the lower left of the screen a command
that changes as you move the selection bar from item to item.
This is the the COMMAND KEY. You may enter a command from the
keyboard instead of using the menu selection system even if the
command is not shown in the lower left corner.
For a complete listing of these commands, see the "COMMAND KEY
SUMMARY" section.

└─────────────┘
FILE lets you open, close, save, or write to another file name,
print the file, get information on the file or quit the file.
* When you are prompted for a file name, you will see the
name of the last file entered. You can accept it by
pressing ENTER, or you can enter a new file name. You can
specify any legal file name, including a drive and/or
path. If you enter a wild card ( * ), *.DOC for example,
you will see a listing of all the files ending with DOC.
Wild cards are described in your DOS manual. Pressing ESC
will cancel the command.
* When existing files are saved, EZX-WORD automatically
creates a backup copy of the file. The old file becomes
the backup and the file on the screen becomes the working
copy. Backup files are given a .BAK extension.
Don't specify file names with the .BAK extension to edit
since they are not used for editing. If you wish to edit
a BAK file, it is a good idea to copy it to another name
first.
For example, copy the BAK file as a TXT file from the DOS
prompt:
COPY YEARPLAN.BAK YEARPLAN.TXT
────
OPEN
────
Opens an additional text window. You will be asked for a file to
edit; if you do not enter one, NONAME is the default name. You
should SAVE it with a file name of your choice using the WRITE
TO menu choice. If you don't name it, additional windows can
not be opened.
─────
CLOSE
─────
Closes the current window. If the file has been edited, you are
asked whether you want to abandon the changes or save the file
with changes you have made.
────
SAVE
────
Saves the file. If you opened with a "master" file, be sure to
WRITE TO a new file name as soon as possible or you will change
your master file, which may not be what you intended to do.
────────
Write to
────────
Asks you for a file name, then saves the file to the name you
just chose. This becomes the new name for the file in the window
(or windows). This command is particularly useful when using
master files you want to use again.
─────
PRINT
─────
EZX-WORD has a wide range of printing options. This menu choice
gives your most common printing options. The section "ADVANCED
FEATURES" has additional printer commands.
The EZX-WORD distribution disk contains printer files with the
extension ".PDF" (for Printer Definition File). These files
store information about commands for a specific printer
manufacturer and model. There are too many different printers
on the market to include all of them with this program, so only
a couple of the most common ones are included.
If your printer is not among those supplied on the program disk,
you may wish to create your own printer definition file. See
the section ADVANCED FEATURES to build a custom printer
definition file.
EZX-WORD will normally print a document as a background task
(printing while you are performing other EZX-WORD tasks), but
can also print a document as a foreground task.
If there is no activity at the keyboard, EZX-WORD moves printing
out of the background and into the foreground. It then prints
the file at a higher speed until you enter something on the
keyboard.
You can stop a print job by going to the PRINT option found
under FILE and then answer "Y" to the "Abort Printing?" prompt.
The PRINT option gives you a pull-down menu with the following
choices:
* PRINT FILE NOW: Start printing the document.
* NAME OF FILE: The document to be printed.
* AUTO FORMATTING: Ignore any special formatting commands
entered with an @ symbol and a two letter code for all
margins, headers, footers, and font commands if this
option is OFF.
* FIRST PAGE: Enter the number of the first page to be
printed.
* LAST PAGE: Enter the number of the last page to be
printed. file (The maximum number of pages allowed in a
document is 4,095).
* WHICH PRINTER: Select the printer definition file (.PDF).
* DEVICE: Select where the output should go. Your choices
are File, LPT1, or LPT2.
If your printer is attached to a parallel port, enter
LPT1 or LPT2, whichever one is in use.
If you have a serial printer, use the DOS "MODE" command to
redirect output. For example, you would type,
MODE LPT1=COM1
or: MODE LPT1=COM2 (if COM1 already in use)
Consult your DOS manual for more details on MODE commands.
If you select FILE as the output device, you must specify
the name of a file and the output will appear as a file
with that name.
* MANUAL PAPER FEED: When OFF, output goes to the printer
continuously. When ON, you insert a new sheet of paper
each time the end of page is reached. This is handy when
using letter head stationary or if you want to print close
to the bottom of the paper.
* USE FORM FEEDS: When ON, a form feed is sent to the
printer when it reaches the end and a blank page is added
to the end of the document. When OFF, blank lines fill
out the remainder of the last page.
* EDIT PRINTER CODES: You edit the strings of characters
sent to the printer for each print job, changing fonts,
margins, headers, etc.
For example, If you need to insert a control character
(Ctrl-M, the the ENTER key, for example), you press SCROLL
LOCK to turn literal interpretation ON, ENTER to insert
the ENTER character, and SCROLL LOCK to turn literal
interpretation OFF again.
* SAVE PRINTER SETUP: Saves the printer codes you just
entered to a separate file name so you can use them
again. The settings for FORMFEED mode and PAPER PAUSE are
also saved.
When you have finished selecting your print options, go to the
"PRINT FILE NOW" option and press ENTER. To cancel the print
request press ESC.

A WINDOW is a view of part of a document, usually 25 lines of
text. You can open a second window using another file or it can
be another part of the file you are currently editing. For
example, you could open a window to show the table of contents
so you could keep track of major topics and page numbers as you
jump from one window to another and move words or paragraphs
back and forth.
EZX-WORD's WINDOW has the following features:
* up to six open windows at a time.
* a WINDOW occupying fewer than seven screen lines (counting
the status and tab lines) cannot be split.
* You can open a window on another part of the same file
by going to the FILE OPEN command and specifying the same
name as the currently open file.

────────────────
FORMAT PARAGRAPH
────────────────
Rearranges words from the current line to the end of the
paragraph within the left and right margins.
The left margin is determined by the location of the first
character in the line. For example, if the first character is
in column 20, the paragraph will assume column 20 as the left
margin. If you chose a line in the middle of a paragraph, the
lines above are ignored and you format from the cursor to the
end of the paragraph.
The margins are indicated by the default margin shown on the
status line above. If you want to use your default left margin,
be sure to move the text on the current line over to left margin
or you will end up with some unusual left margins in the
paragraph.
This feature was designed to let you rapidly reformat paragraphs
and lines with varied first columns.
RIGHT-JUSTIFICATION ON evenly pads the spaces in the lines until
the last character on the line touches the right margin. This is
commonly seen in newspapers and magazines.
The end of a paragraph is defined by a blank line below the last
character or by a line containing the print formatting command
( @ ) in column 1 of the line below.
────────────────
TEMPORARY MARGIN
────────────────
Moves the left margin one TAB stop to the right.
This temporary margin is only for the current paragraph. The
TEMPORARY MARGIN works only if WORDWRAP and FIXED TABS are ON.
When the TAB LINE is ON, the TEMPORARY MARGIN is indicated by an
arrow located to the left of column 1 pointing to the right.
──────────────
MARGIN RELEASE
──────────────
Temporarily lets you type beyond the default right margin. It
works only for the line you are currently in.
─────────
ATTRIBUTE
─────────
Is a pull-down menu to select the font or fonts you wish to use.
You select fonts by inserting special control characters
recognized by your printer into a document. For example, you
can mix BOLD, SUBSCRIPT, ITALICS, COMPRESSED and other fonts
within the same document, if you printer will support it.
If TOGGLE FONT DISPLAY is ON, the screen display shows each font
chosen by a specific color for that font.
To change the font, first mark the section as a block. Go to
the TEXT option, then to ATTRIBUTE option and select your
choice. You can assign a different color to each font displayed
by going to OPTIONS on the main menu and then to COLORS for your
choices. When you exit back to the edit mode by pressing ESC
three times, you will see the highlighted block in a different
color.
If no block is marked or if it is hidden, EZX-WORD inserts a
pair of control characters at the cursor's position, and then
places the cursor between them. As long as the cursor remains
between the two control characters, text entered will be
displayed in the selected font.
The font characters are still there, so when the cursor happens
to be below one of these characters, a special symbol is shown
at the right edge of the STATUS LINE. For example, if the
cursor is within a block marked as BOLD, Ctrl-B is shown.
When TOGGLE FONT DISPLAY is OFF, these characters are shown as
highlighted uppercase characters, although they will not appear
when the document is printed. When you want to remove, copy or
delete font choices, they are treated in the same way as any
other character. You can not edit font choices if TOGGLE FONT
DISPLAY is ON.
The fonts are as follows:
* BOLD.................................... ALT-B
* DOUBLE.................................. ALT-D
* UNDERSCORE.............................. ALT-S
* SUPERSCRIPT............................. ALT-H
* SUBSCRIPT............................... ALT-L
* COMPRESSED.............................. ALT-C
* ITALICS................................. ALT-I
* WHICH FONT?............................. Ctrl-OC
(Shows the font in effect at the cursor's position)
───────────
CENTER LINE
───────────
Centers the current line within the left and right margins.
──────────
SET MARKER
──────────
Sets one of the ten text markers at the current position of the
cursor. Ctrl-K1 sets marker 1, Ctrl-K2 sets marker 2, etc. Go
to any previously set marker with Ctrl-Qm where m is the number
of the marker.
────────────
RESTORE LINE
────────────
Undo all changes made to a line of text as long as you have
not left the line.
────────
UNDELETE
────────
Restores lines deleted with the DELETE LINE command or the
DELETE BLOCK command. It will not restore single characters or
words.

The BLOCK menu manipulates marked blocks of text.
A block is any arbitrarily defined unit of text you choose. A
block can be as small as a single character or as large as an
entire file. Mark a block by placing a BEGIN BLOCK marker at
the first character in the desired block, and an END BLOCK
marker just beyond the last character. Once marked, the block
can be copied, moved, deleted, or written to another file.
The HIDE BLOCK command removes the block color so that it looks
like the rest of the document. The block is still marked and
the color can be restored by entering HIDE BLOCK again.
─────

─────
Marks the beginning of a block. The block becomes visible only
when the END BLOCK marker is entered.
───

───
Marks the end of a block.
────
HIDE
────
Toggles the MARKED BLOCK colors OFF and ON. Some block options
work only when the block is visible, but the block related
cursor movement commands work anytime.
────
COPY
────
Copy a block to the current cursor position. The new block will
push the remaining text to the right or down to make room. The
original block is left unchanged.
────
MOVE
────
Moves a block from its current position to the cursor position.
The gap in the former position is filled up by the text that
followed. Add or delete spaces to align the moved block within
the new location.
@CP 4
──────
DELETE
──────
Deletes a block. Although UNDO LAST DELETION can usually
restore portions of an accidentally deleted block, you can not
restore a complete block, so USE DELETE WITH CARE!
─────
WRITE
─────
Copy a block to another file. If the file already exists, you
can either overwrite it or add the block to the end of it. If
the file does not exist, a new file is created.
────
READ
────
Reads another file into the document at the cursor's current
position exactly as if it were a COPY or MOVE BLOCK command.
──────
FORMAT
──────
Reformats all paragraphs within the currently marked block to fit
within the default left and right margins.
─────────────
TOP OF SCREEN
─────────────
Moves the cursor up to the first line in the window.
────────────────
MARK SINGLE WORD
────────────────
Marks a single word as a block. If the cursor is within a word,
that word will be marked. If it is not within a word, then the
word to the right of the cursor will be marked. The left word
will be marked if there is no word to the right of the cursor.

current cursor location.
─────────────
COLUMN NUMBER
─────────────
Moves the cursor to the specified column of the current line.
Columns can number from 1 to 999. If the value is preceded by a
plus (+) or minus (-) sign, the column number will be calculated
left or right from the current cursor location.
───────────
TOP OF FILE
───────────
Moves the cursor to the first character in the first line.
──────────────
BOTTOM OF FILE
──────────────
Moves the cursor to the last character in the last line.
──────
MARKER
──────
A pull-down window shows all the markers, the files they are in,
and the number of the line containing the marker.
A marker works just like a book marker and is used to move
around in a file (or between files and windows) without having
to search for the spot each time. You place a marker in a place
you want to return to often, such as a table of contents.
Markers never appear in the printed document.
──────────────
START OF BLOCK
──────────────
Moves the cursor to the BLOCK BEGIN mark. This works even if
the block is hidden or the BLOCK END marker is not set.
────────────
END OF BLOCK
────────────
Moves the cursor to the BLOCK END mark.

└─────────────┘
Find and replace character strings with new strings.
This allows you to make extensive changes throughout the
document with a few key strokes.
────
FIND
────
Search for a string of up to 67 characters. You can search for
the previously entered string or you can enter a new one. Cancel
a search with ESC.
Ctrl-P can be used to enter control characters. For example, to
find a period at the end of a line, you would enter Ctrl-P and
then Ctrl-M.
After the search string is entered, you must chose options. The
options you used last are shown. You can enter new options,
edit the current options, or select them again. The options
are:
B - Search backwards from the cursor position toward the
beginning of the file.
G - Search globally. The entire file is scanned for the
search string, regardless of the current position of the
cursor.
L - Limit search to the currently marked block.
n - Find the nth occurrence of the string (overridden by the
L option).
U - Ignore case, upper or lower
W - Search for whole words only; skips matching patterns
embedded within words.
If the document contains a match to the search string, the
match is highlighted and the cursor is positioned just beyond
it.
───────
REPLACE
───────
This is the same as FIND except you can replace the string with
any other string (up to 67 characters). After entering the
SEARCH string, you enter the REPLACE WITH string. The last
replacement string entered may be accepted, edited, or a new
string entered.
The OPTIONS used last are displayed. You may enter new options,
edit the current options, or select them.
─────────
USE MACRO
─────────
Searches for a string, moves the cursor to to the first
character of the string and then executes the commands in the
macro. After entering the SEARCH string, a menu of your macros
is displayed. Select your macro or cancel by pressing ESC.
The OPTIONS used last are shown. You may enter new options,
edit the current options, or select them. The OPTIONS are the
same as for FIND AND REPLACE. Use the ABORT command to cancel.
SEARCH AND APPLY commands, for example, can be run from inside a
macro so it is possible to create an almost unlimited
interacting group of commands. Two examples of such macros are
included in the EZXW.MAC file (numbers 8 and 9), and they may
give you some ideas for your own macros. See them by pressing
F10, then E for EZX-WORD, M for Macros, E for Edit, then 8 or 9.
─────
AGAIN

───────
MARGINS
───────
Is a pull-down menu to set screen or printing page margins and
page length.
* LEFT
Sets the left margin.
* RIGHT
Sets the right margin.
* TOP
Sets the default top margin.
* BOTTOM
Sets the default bottom margin.
* PAGE LENGTH
Sets the default numbers of lines per page.
──────────────
FORMAT OPTIONS
──────────────
A pull-down menu to control the way text is entered and/or
formatted on the screen. The ENTER key will change the toggle
from one option to the other. When satisfied with the choice,
press ESC.
* JUSTIFY
If ON, the last character in each line touches the right
margin with blank spaces inserted in the line.
Right-justification ON automatically turns on WORDWRAP.
* WORDWRAP
If wordwrap is ON, EZX-WORD will insert a line break just
before the word you are currently typing over the right
margin, and move the word to the next line. WORD WRAP OFF
also turns off right-justification.
* AUTO INDENT
When Autoindent mode is ON, ENTER will move the cursor
down to the next row below the first non blank character
in the line above.
* INSERT MODE
Selects INSERT or OVERWRITE mode. In INSERT mode, text to
the right of the cursor is moved to the right as new text
is entered. In OVERWRITE mode, any text to the right of
the cursor is overwritten when new text is entered.
Notice that the cursor's size tells you which mode you are
in: A blinking line indicates OVERWRITE, while a blinking
block indicates INSERT. Display Options/Options disables
the Block cursor difference.
Use INSERT mode to create new paragraphs and additional
blank lines. While editing a document, you can change
from one to the other at any time with the INS key.
* PAGE BREAKS
Turns PAGINATION ON and adds two first columns to the
display to show automatic page-break markers ( >> >> ).
You may not wish to have a page break in the middle of a
paragraph, so you can see where to shift text so that the
page break occurs in a blank area. For example, if PAGE
LENGTH is 55 lines, you see the page-break markers every
55 lines. Note that the LINE NO. in the status line
changes to LINE 1 when the cursor crosses over an
automatic page break.
You can enter a manual page break by entering the command
Ctrl-PL. Hold down the Ctrl key and hit P then L and then
release the Ctrl key. You will see the highlighted letter
"L" in the first column indicating a page break. Manual
page breaks do not affect the page numbering between the
automatic page-break markers.
* COMPRESS WRAP
When Compress wrap is OFF, EZX-WORD will not remove
spaces in a line when it is in word wrap. When EZX-WORD
normally wraps or reformats text that falls beyond the
right margin, excess blanks are compressed from the
current line. This will remove one of the two spaces
after a period! Previously right-justified text can be
reformatted to remove the padding spaces.
You may not want to remove some desired spaces, such as
two spaces after the end of a sentence or those used for
aligning columns of figures in a table. COMPRESS WRAP
toggle ON will keep these desired spaces.
────
TABS
────
A pull-down menu for tabulation. EZX-WORD has two kinds of
tabs: FIXED TABS and SMART TABS.
FIXED TABS
──────────
Are like the tab stops on a typewriter: You set them once,
and they remain the same until you change them. By
default, fixed tabs are ON and smart tabs are OFF.
To change the locations of the stops when using fixed
tabs, use SET TAB SIZE, EDIT TAB LINE, or SET TAB LINE.
SMART TABS
──────────
See the first letter in each word on the previous line and
consider it a tab stop. Smart tabs are particularly useful
when creating tables, columns of numbers or writing source
code for computer programs.
* SET TABS
Sets tab stops at each word on the current line. This
is particularly useful when entering information in
columns.
* PUT TABS
Saves the current tab stops and margin settings inside
the document itself as a reference. To insure that it
will be ignored when printing and reformatting, an @
sign is automatically placed in column 1. You can
modify these settings later by moving the cursor to this
line and issuing the SET TAB line command.
* RESTORE TABS
Cancels any special tab settings specified with the SET
TAB LINE or EDIT TAB LINE commands, and restores evenly
spaced FIXED TABS.
* EDIT TABS
If FIXED TABS are ON, you can change the location of
each tab stop. Pressing the space bar inserts or
removes tab stops at the position of the cursor. the new
tab stop entries or you can add new stops with the INS
key and delete stops with the DEL key. The Left and
Right arrow keys move the cursor along the tab line; TAB
moves it to the next stop; HOME moves it to the first
stop; and END moves it to the last one.
When finished, return to normal editing mode by pressing
ENTER to keep the changes or ESC to cancel them.
* DISPLAY TABS
Turns the tab line ON or OFF. The tab line shows you
all tab stops and the default left and right margins.
Turning ON the tab line turns on FIXED TABS.
* TAB SIZE
Sets the default tab size for FIXED TABS.
─────────────────
LOAD FILE OPTIONS
─────────────────
Allow you to customize EZX-WORD to fit your particular
needs, or as to take advantage of your computer features.
These changes are temporarily.
* HOME DIRECTORY
Tells EZX-WORD where the optional support files are.
* MAIN DICTIONARY
Tells EZX-WORD the dictionary currently being used.
Registered users will have multiple dictionaries to choose
from.
* FILE EXTENSION
The default file name extension. This extension is
automatically added if the file lacks an extension. For
example, if you have set the default extension to .DOC and
want EZX-WORD to load SAMPLE.DOC when the program starts, you
can enter EZXW SAMPLE.
* EXPAND TABS
Converts TABS to spaces when reading a file created with
other editors. Tab size is set with the SET TAB SIZE
command.
* WRITE TABS
When WRITE TABS is ON, EZX-WORD converts strings of
blanks to tabs when a file is written to disk. This is
intended to save disk space. This is handy for indented
programming languages like Pascal, C and Assembler.
* TOGGLE STRIP HI-BIT
Strips high-order bits created by editors which use the
eighth (highest) bit in a byte to store information. This
option also tells EZX-WORD to convert their "dot" printing
commands to EZX-WORD @ commands. Note: this process is
irreversible, BE CAREFUL.
* UNDO LIMIT
Sets the size of the "undo buffer," which stores deleted
lines. The default value is 20 lines.
───────────────
DISPLAY OPTIONS
───────────────
A pull-down menu to manage the screen display. Options activate
or deactivate features that you may find helpful. None of these
commands directly affects the documents you are editing.
* SNOW CONTROL
EZX-WORD can avoid the annoying screen interference known
as SNOW on Color Graphic Adapters (CGA).
Enhanced Graphics Adapters (EGA) and many of the newer
color adapters do not have this problem. If you don't
experience this problem either, then turn snow prevention
OFF to improve EZX-WORD's screen display change speed.
Monochrome adapters are unaffected by snow.
* BLOCK CURSOR
Replaces the blinking cursor you normally see with a
non blinking block. The appearance of the block cursor
can be changed with the SET COLORS command. This change
is temporary and is restored to normal when you leave
EZX-WORD.
* 43 LINE MODE
Activates the special 43-line display mode available on an
Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) or 50-lines on a VGA
system. The display is restored to the normal 25-line
mode when you leave EZX-WORD.
* FONT DISPLAY
Turns the font display ON and OFF. If ON, you see the font
choices in color. If it is OFF, you see the control
characters themselves.
* KEY HELP
The primary commands associated with menu choices are
displayed on the prompt line as you scroll through the
lists of choices. This feature is intended to help you
learn the shortcut commands for menu items. You can use
these commands instead of the menu choices if you wish.
* ZOOM STATE
If ON, a windows is zoomed to fill the screen when it is
opened.
* TOGGLE MARKER DISPLAY
Hides or reveals all text markers.
──────
COLORS
──────
Changes the colors used for text windows, status lines,
pull-down menus, etc. Select the color you want by moving the
selection bar with the arrow keys, then press ENTER. The items
available for color choices are displayed, and the current
setting is marked with a snowflake character ( * ). You can
change the setting by moving the snowflake with the arrow keys.
As it moves, the item name changes color. When satisfied, press
ENTER. Press ESC to cancel any changes.
──────────
SAVE SETUP
──────────
Saves the current configuration settings as the DEFAULT, including
items you have not changed. Be sure to specify the drive and
directory where EZX-WORD's support files are located (refer to the
section on CONFIGURING EZX-WORD for details).

EZX-WORD is a menu of miscellaneous commands.
──────────────
SPELLING CHECK
──────────────
EZX-WORD can spell-check your document using its built-in
spelling checker. EZX-WORD checks the document in the current
window. By default, spell checking proceeds from the current
cursor position to the end of the file. If a block is marked
and visible, only that block will be checked.
Once spell-check begins, EZX-WORD tracks progress on the status
line. The line and column counters and the % marker tell you
what part of the document is being checked.
When an unrecognized word is found, a pull-down menu shows you
your options:
* SKIP ONCE
Ignores the spelling of this word.
* IGNORE FOR THIS DOCUMENT
Ignores the spelling of this word throughout the document.
* EDIT FROM KEYBOARD
Corrects the spelling of the word, displayed in a prompt
box. You can edit the word, or press ESC to return to the
previous menu. The spelling of the word you enter is
rechecked to be correct.
* MARK WITH "~"
Places a tilde ( ~ ) in front of the word. After the
document has been check, you can use the FIND command to
locate the marked words. These marks will not appear when
the document is printed.
* ADD TO DICTIONARY
Adds the word to EZX-WORD's auxiliary dictionary. This
feature is useful for building a special dictionary for
technical or other words not commonly found in a desktop
dictionary.
* BATCH MARK REST OF DOCUMENT
Marks all unrecognized words found when checking spelling.
From this point on, all unrecognized words are marked with
tildes ( ~ ). You can stop the spell-checking operation
at any time by pressing any key. You are then asked if
you want to stop or not. Press Y to stop, N to continue.
* 0-9
Sound-alike words are listed from EZX-WORD's built in
dictionary. You can scroll through the list and if you
find a word to replace the current one, replace it by
pressing ENTER. If no word is found, press ESC to return
to the previous menu.
──────
MACROS
──────
You could spend a good deal of time performing repetitive tasks
when editing a document. For example, Secretaries write
look-alike business letters, programmers compose programs with
varied margins and repeated subroutines, and so on.
The answer to this sort of drudgery is the macro: a single
command or keystroke that, when "played back," can simulate the
entry of many keystrokes at the keyboard.
EZX-WORD allows you to record, edit, save, and restore up to ten
macros, each containing up to 255 keystrokes. You can have as
many macro files as your disks will hold, but only one file of
ten macros can be kept in memory at a time.
* LOAD MACROS
Load a file of previously saved macros.
* STORE MACROS
Saves the current macros in a file name you specify.
* PLAYBACK
Plays back the macro you select.
* RECORD
Turns macro recording ON or OFF. When macro recording is
ON, all subsequent keystrokes (up to the 255-keystroke
limit) are saved until macro recording is turned OFF
again. Once the macro is recorded, you are asked to
select a macro number to store it under.
* EDIT
Allows you to edit previously saved macros. EZX-WORD has
a special editing program designed for working with
macros. Some keys are slightly different than the
EZX-WORD editing keys. Regular keystrokes are shown as
normal characters without highlighting.
You are asked to select a macro number and a name for the
macro to edit. Then you are in the macro editor.
Several keys serve special purposes:
* Ctrl-BACKSPACE deletes an entire macro;
* ESC restores the macro to its previous state;
* the ENTER key takes you out of the macro editor.
* The SCROLL LOCK acts as a toggle, turning literal
interpretation of keystrokes on and off. For example,
if you wanted to assign a macro to the ENTER key or the
BACKSPACE key, you would first press SCROLL LOCK.
Pressing it again would restore all special keys to
their previous functions.
* INSERT SCRAP MACRO plays back the scrap macro (macro 0)
a prompted number of times (1 to 9). The "scrap macro"
is always the same as the last macro that was recorded.
* INSERT MACRO plays back the specified macro one time.
ALT-1 plays back macro 1, ALT-2 macro 2, and so on.
─────────────────
DISPLAY DIRECTORY
─────────────────
Shows you a directory listing. At the prompt box you may enter a
"wild card" ( * ); for example:
C:\LETTERS\*.DOC
shows you all the files in subdirectory LETTERS on drive C that
have the extension .DOC. If a drive or path is not specified,
the default directory is assumed. Once a wild card has been
entered, all files matching the search criteria will be
displayed in sorted order in a pull-down window. See your DOS
manual for additional information on wild cards.
If the window is too small for all the file names, you can
scroll through the list using PgUp and PgDn keys. HOME scrolls
to the first file in the list, and END scrolls to the last file.
Pressing an alphabetic key (A through Z) will move the selection
bar to the first name that starts with that letter; if none of
the names start with that letter, the selection bar moves to the
closest match.
────────────────
CHANGE DIRECTORY
────────────────
Changes the active drive and directory. You can enter a drive
and path or, if you have a hard disk, you can specify the file
wild card and choose a new path from a directory listing. For
example:
C:\*.*
shows you a list of all the sub-directories that branch from the
root directory on drive C.
────────────────
OPERATING SYSTEM
────────────────
Gives you access to DOS commands or to other programs from
inside EZX-WORD. When EZX-WORD temporarily exits to MS-DOS, the
DOS prompt is modified to indicate that a EZX-WORD shell is
active.
At the prompt, enter a DOS command just as you would at the DOS
prompt; for example typing "dir" execute the DOS "dir" command.
To return to EZX-WORD, type EXIT at the DOS command line and you
will be right back where you started in EZX-WORD.
If you've been editing several files at once or one very large
file, however, the amount of memory available may not be
sufficient for your other program even if you have closed all
but a single text window.
If you are running EZX-WORD on a floppy based system you should
note that there must be a copy of COMMAND.COM on the same drive
and directory that DOS was originally loaded from.
If you want to execute a program (as opposed to a simple DOS
command like DIR), a copy of that program must be available on
the currently logged drive and directory. It would probably be
easier if you saved the file, exit EZX-WORD, run your program(s)
and then load EZX-WORD again.
WARNING: Do not load a memory resident program while in the DOS
shell. You could create conflicts that could stop the program.
────
HELP
────
General help is available both when you are in the menu system
and when you are editing. By selecting E for EZX-WORD and then
H for HELP at the main menu, or by pressing F1, you can invoke a
menu of topics on which help is available. Move the selection
bar to the desired topic and press ENTER to get information.

in the same window. If the file has been modified, you can
either abandon it or save it.
SAVE/SWITCH FILES...................... CTRL-KD
─────────────────
Saves the file in the current window. The window is then
cleared, and you are prompted for a new file to edit in the same
window.
INSERT CONTROL CHARACTER............... Ctrl-P
────────────────────────
Allows control characters to be entered into the text. For
example, pressing Ctrl-P and then Ctrl-L would insert a Ctrl-L
(page break) into the text. Ordinary control characters are
then displayed as a "selected" capital letter in the same colors
you chose for a marked block. See the section on PRINT
FORMATTING COMMANDS for more details.
SET TEMPORARY MARGIN TO CURSOR......... Ctrl-OH or F4
──────────────────────────────
Same as the Set temporary margin command except that the left
margin is set to the current position of the cursor instead of
the next tab stop.
TOGGLE CASE............................ Ctrl-OO
───────────
Changes the case of the character at the cursor. Uppercase
letters are changed to lowercase and lower case are changed to
uppercase. If the cursor is within a marked block, all
characters in the block are changed.
LOWER CASE............................. Ctrl-OV
──────────
Same as TOGGLE CASE except that it changes the text to
lowercase.
UPPER CASE............................. Ctrl-OU
──────────
Same as TOGGLE CASE except that it changes the text to
uppercase.
INSERT UNDO BUFFER..................... Ctrl-QV
──────────────────
Inserts the entire contents of the undo buffer contents to the
current line.
FLUSH UNDO BUFFER...................... Ctrl-QJ
─────────────────
Empties the undo buffer.

────────────────────────
Moves to the last cursor position. This is used to move back to
the previous position after a FIND or FIND AND REPLACE
operation.
UP TO EQUAL INDENT..................... Ctrl-JB
──────────────────
Moves the cursor up to the beginning of the previous line at the
same indentation as the current line. For example, if the first
non blank character in the current line is at column 10, the
cursor is moved up to the next line that also begins at column
10.
DOWN TO EQUAL INDENT................... Ctrl-JE
────────────────────
Moves the cursor down to the next line at the same indentation
as the current line.
NEXT SENTENCE.......................... Ctrl-QZ
─────────────
Moves the cursor down to the beginning of the next sentence. A
sentence is ended by a period, semicolon, question mark,
exclamation mark, or blank line. Any print formatting command
is treated as the beginning of a sentence.
PREVIOUS SENTENCE...................... Ctrl-QW
─────────────────
The cursor is moved up to the beginning of the previous
sentence.
SHOW AVAILABLE MEMORY.................. Ctrl-JR
─────────────────────
Shows you the amount of random access memory (RAM) not used yet.

╔═══════════╗
║PAGE BREAKS║
╚═══════════╝
Page break markers are shown at the very left side of the screen
as double arrows ( »» ). This helps you see where a page break
will occur so you can then either manually insert a page break
or add blank lines around the page break. The location of these
marks is determined by your choice of PAGE LENGTH. Manual page
breaks do not change the number of lines between these page
break markers.
Enter a manual page break with the command Ctrl-PL. A manual
page break will appear in the left margin as a highlighted "L".
╔════════════════════╗
║CONFIGURING EZX-WORD║
╚════════════════════╝
EZX-WORD will always look for its support files in this same
drive and directory. If no home directory is specified,
EZX-WORD will assume that its files are in the current drive and
directory.
Once you have EZX-WORD and your document loaded, you will need
to specify a HOME DIRECTORY location of the dictionary, printer
and other support files. EZX-WORD needs to find these files
before editing your document.
To set the HOME DIRECTORY, press F10 to get to the main menu.
Then press O for Options, L for Load file options, and H for
Home directory. Enter the name of the drive and directory where
the EZX-WORD program and support files are located and press
ENTER.
To install the SPELLING DICTIONARY press M and then ENTER to
choose from available dictionaries. The SMALL.DCT file included
with EZXW has over 21,000 words available.
Select the dictionary and press ENTER.
Now press ESC to return to the Options menu and press S to SAVE
your setup.
If you want to modify the program keyboard command assignments
before running EZX-WORD, run the keyboard configuration program
EZXWKCFG.EXE. Because of space limitations, EZXWKCFG is
included in the registered version only.

keyboard.
╔══════════════════════════╗
║RECONFIGURING COMMAND KEYS║
╚══════════════════════════╝
This function is only available in the registered version of
EZX-WORD.
To customize EZX-WORD, use the keyboard configuration program
EZXWKCFG.EXE. You have the default set of primary commands
shown throughout this manual and a secondary set.
You can reconfigure EZX-WORD to use the commands of another word
processor or editor of your choice. It is recommended that you
build these commands in the SECONDARY set and not change the
PRIMARY set. The only restriction is to avoid use of the same
command in both primary and secondary sets. If you do have two
sets, both will be active, so conflicting commands are to be
avoided. Resolve the conflict by erasing the conflicting
command in the primary set.
You may wish to only change some of the provided commands in the
primary set. For example, the Zoom window command is by default
assigned to Ctrl-OZ. Using the configuration program, you could
assign this command to ALT-Z.
EZXWKCFG also creates the customized help file EZXW.HLP, which
is used by EZX-WORD's context-sensitive help system. EZXW.EXE
and EZXW.TXT must be in the same drive and directory as
EZXWKCFG.EXE when you run EZXWKCFG. EZXW.HLP need not be
present. When the default keystroke commands are changed
EZXW.HLP will be created or, if it already exists, corrected to
show your modifications.
Running EZXWKCFG
────────────────
Enter EZXWKCFG at the DOS cursor.
You will be asked:
Perform fast entry for fully reconfigured keyboard?
If you press Y for Yes, you may reconfigure the command keys
using the fast-entry method. NO is given by pressing N or ENTER
to reconfigure the command keys using the random access method.
Fast Entry
──────────
gives the following options:
- Press ENTER to accept current entry
- Press new keys then ENTER for new command
- SCROLL LOCK to toggle ON literal mode
- ESC to quit
You enter a new key sequence by pressing the keys you wish to
use to use for that command and finish with ENTER.
You can correct mistakes with the BACKSPACE key, C to clear
entry, or R to Restore previous entry.
To enter either the Enter key or a Ctrl-M, for example, you must
first press the SCROLL LOCK key, to enter keys literally, then
press it again when you've finished.
ESC exits the fast-entry procedure and takes you to random
access entry.
Random Access
─────────────
The random access option or the fast-entry procedure can alter
any or all of the command keys.
Move to the key sequence you want to change and press ENTER.
LEFT arrow and RIGHT arrow select primary or secondary command
key sets. You can scroll through the list of command keys with
UP arrow, DOWN arrow, PgUp, and PgDn. HOME takes you to the top,
and END to the last.
You can correct mistakes with the BACKSPACE key, C to clear
entry, or R to Restore previous entry.
When you have finished, press Q to QUIT or W to WRITE TO a disk
file.
If you have accidentally assigned the same key sequence to two
different commands, you will see an error message. Correct
mistakes by going to the highlighted items and deleting one of
the two. Since you are creating a secondary set, deleting the
primary command is the logical choice.
You will see an error message if the new list of keystrokes is
larger than the primary set. Correct this by deleting a few
secondary key sequences.
After reconfiguring the command keys, EZX-WORD will create a new
help file (EZXW.HLP). You may make minor changes to EZXW.HLP if
you wish to customize the help system, but be sure to edit only
a copy of the file, not the original.

║ADVANCED FEATURES║
╚═════════════════╝
PRINT FORMATTING COMMANDS
─────────────────────────
In addition to the font commands discussed under the menu option
ATTRIBUTES, EZX-WORD supports a second set of commands entered
by using the @ symbol together with a two letter abbreviation.
These commands control pagination and layout features such as
margins and headers and footers.
Issue these commands by creating a new line and placing the @
symbol in column 1. This symbol is followed by a two letter
abbreviation and a parameter or argument. You can see these
commands on screen when PAGINATION is ON.
@POn - Offsets the page to the right by n columns. This sets
a left margin for the remainder of the printed
document; there is no affect on screen. Default is 0.
@PA - Starts a new page. If pagination is on, the effect
of this command will be visible on the screen as
well as in the printed document.
@CPn - Sets a conditional page break. This starts a new
page if fewer than n lines remain on the page.
@PNn - Sets page number to n.
@OP - Omits page numbers. By default, page numbers are
printed; there is no effect on screen.
@PG - Prints page numbers; there is no effect on screen.
@PCn - Prints page numbers in column n. The default is
column 33. There is no effect on screen.
@PLn - Sets page length to n. The default length is 66
lines.
@MTn - Sets top margin to n. The default margin is 3 lines.
@MBn - Sets bottom margin to n. The default margin is 8 lines.
@HMn - Sets header margin to n lines. The default margin is 1
line. There is no effect on screen.
@FMn - Sets footer margin to n lines. The default margin is 3
lines. There is no effect on screen.
@HE<line> - Sets page header to <line>. There is no effect
on screen.
@FO<line> - Sets page footer to <line>. There is no effect
on screen.
Headers and footer strings can contain any of the control
characters used to activate fonts, as well as any of the
following special characters:
# - This is replaced with the current page number.
Ctrl-K ignores following spaces on even-numbered
pages; this allows you, for example, to create
headers and footers that print flush right on
odd-numbered pages, and flush left on even-numbered
pages.
\ - Interprets the next character literally; for example,
\# would print "#" rather than the current page number.
Notes:
* MT must be greater than HM or header won't be printed.
* MB must be greater than FM or footer won't be printed.
* PL must be greater than MT + MB.
* If MT=0 or MB=0, then no pagination will occur.
Default page numbers do not appear when FO is used.
Creating a custom printer definition file.
──────────────────────────────────────────
1. Lets assume you have a Diablo printer. The first step is
to create a generic driver. You will then modify it for
the Diablo command set. From DOS, copy an existing .PDF
file to a new file, for example:
COPY PLAIN.PDF DIABLO.PDF
2. In EZX-WORD, give the Print command (Ctrl-KP), press W
(for Which printer), and enter the name of the new file.
EZX-WORD will then read the file into memory.
3. Now press E (for edit printer codes) and, with your
printer manual close at hand, edit the printer strings.
4. When you are finished editing all the command strings,
press ESC to return to the Print Setup pull-down menu,
and S to Save the printer setup. If you wish, you can
also return to the main menu; select O for Options and S
for Save setup to save your new .PDF file name as the
default.
EZX-WORD will then save the name of the newly created file as
the default .PDF file. Once you make a backup copy of your new
.PDF file, you should never have to go through this process
again.

║TUTORIAL║
╚════════╝
To help you get acquainted with EZX-WORD, the following
instructions will take you through the editing of a sample
business letter.
If you have not done so already, go to the OPTIONS menu and set
the various options, including COLOR. After the changes, be
sure to save them with the SAVE SETUP option.
To start, load the file TUTOR.TXT into EZX-WORD by typing EZXW
TUTOR.TXT. This document also contains a few deliberately
mispelled words, which you can correct with the Spell-Checker.
1. EDITING A SENTENCE
The first task is to modify the first sentence by adding
the word "computer" before the word "Widget". Move the cursor to
"W" in Widget and hit the INS key once or twice until "Insert"
appears on the top status line.
Now, type the word "improved", but don't type the " " marks.
Finish with a space by hitting the space bar so "improvedWidget"
is separated into "improved Widget".
If INSERT is OFF, OVER is ON and you type over any existing
text. INSERT pushes existing text to the right.
2. SPLIT A PARAGRAPH IN TWO
Next, we will split a paragraph into two paragraphs. Move the
cursor to the last sentence in the second paragraph beginning
with "We supply....".
Place the cursor under the "W" in "We" and hit the INS key to
turn INSERT on. Hit the ENTER key and the last sentence has
moved down one line. We still need a space between paragraphs,
so hit ENTER once again. Now you see a blank line before the
sentence "We supply....". If you are in OVER, hitting the ENTER
key will only move the cursor down and not change anything.
Remember, INSERT or OVERWRITE are different. You will use them
a lot when you are editing a document.
3. REFORMAT A PARAGRAPH
The new paragraph is uneven, so we will now FORMAT it to fit
properly between the margins. Move the cursor to the first
letter of the paragraph, which is "W" in "We".
Press function key F10 for the main menu. Press "T" for "TEXT"
or move the selection bar using the arrow keys on the key pad.
Press the ENTER key.
Hit F1 to see what the HELP screen can do. This is one of the
most powerful tools you have! The help screen you see tells you
how to reformat a paragraph. Exit the help screen by hitting
the ESC key. Remember to hit F1 anytime you want a quick answer
for the task at hand. Now return to your task, formatting a
paragraph...
FORMAT PARAGRAPH is the first selection, so press the ENTER key
if the selection bar is on it.
You will see that the paragraph is much more even within the
margins, and more like the other paragraphs.
Another way to format the paragraph is to move the cursor to the
first letter of the paragraph, then hold down the Ctrl key and
hit the "B" key.
Both methods work and you can use either one. Use the menu, or
use the command key.
4. CHANGING A WORD (EDIT A WORD)
Let's change a word in the last sentence of this paragraph.
Change the word "three" to "four".
Move the cursor to the "t" in "three". With INSERT ON, type the
word "four". You now see "fourthree". We need to erase the
letters "three". Move the cursor to "t" in "three". Hit the DEL
key for each letter in "three" and watch them disappear.
If you were in OVERWRITE, the word "four" would overwrite
"three" and you would see "foure". Move the cursor to the "e" in
"foure" and hit the DEL key. The "e" is removed.
5. MOVE A PARAGRAPH
Now we will mark a paragraph and move it to another spot in the
letter. Let's move the paragraph beginning with "Early Widgets"
to just after the paragraph ending with "new colors".
We do this by marking the BLOCK we want to move, going to the
new location, and then using the MOVE command.
So, go to the first word and mark it. Do this by moving the
cursor to the first letter "E" in "Early". Hit F10 for the MAIN
MENU and then select BLOCK.
Select BEGIN to mark the block beginning.
Move the cursor to just after "compatibality." to mark the BLOCK
end. Hit F10, then BLOCK and then select END.
You will see the block a different color than the rest of the
document. If it is not, check and see if you set the COLOR
option so that a BLOCK is different in color.
Go to the exact spot where you want to move the BLOCK. There is
only one blank line between the two existing paragraphs, so it
is easier if you first add a second blank line between them.
Use INSERT and hit ENTER like you did earlier.
Carefully move the cursor to the spot where you want the first
letter of the marked block to appear. Hit F10, then select
BLOCK, then select MOVE.
The paragraph has moved, but now sits right above another
paragraph. You want a blank line between them, so move the
cursor to the first letter of the bottom paragraph, which is "T"
in "The commercial.....".
Go to INSERT and then hit ENTER. You now have a blank line
between the two paragraphs.
You will also notice a blank hole where the moved paragraph used
to be. The space can be eliminated by moving the cursor to the
topmost blank line and then hitting Ctrl-Y, the line delete
command.
Repeat this until all of the unwanted lines are gone. This will
also delete lines full of text, so be careful.
The same method is used to COPY a word, line or a paragraph.
The only difference is that you select COPY instead of MOVE.
The original marked block stays unchanged and unmoved.
6. CHANGING MARGINS
You can change the location of the left and right margins any
time and the existing text will not change. It will change if
you FORMAT a paragraph. It is possible to have a variety of
paragraph margins within the same document. Here is one way to
do it.
Suppose we want to have the paragraph beginning with "Early
Widgets" with a left margin of 20 and right margin at 60.
Hit F10, then select OPTIONS, then select MARGINS, then select
LEFT. The block in the middle of the screen will let you type a
new number for the left margin. Type 20 and then hit ENTER. Do
the same for the RIGHT margin.
The status line now shows the narrower margins.
Go to the first letter of the paragraph you want to change ("E"
in "Early"). Hit Ctrl-B to reformat the paragraph.
Any further format work will use these new margins, so you may
want to change them back to the previous settings.
You can do the same thing with Ctrl-OL for left and Ctrl-OR for
right margin changes.
7. ADDING A PAGE BREAK
After doing all of these changes, we now decide to break the
letter into two pages. We decide to do it before the paragraph
beginning with "Early Widgets...".
We can do this two ways. First, is to use the "@PA" characters.
You must have "@" in column 1 or it won't work at all. @PA is
command understood by the pages counter and the printer.
Go to the line above "Early" in column 1 and type @PA without
the quote marks.
You can also use the MACRO we provided. It is MACRO 1 and you
activate it by hitting ALT 1. This will install @PA the same as
if you typed it.
The MACRO is a little faster, but it does give you an an easier
tool and ALT 1 is easier to remember!
8. SPELL CHECKING
The spelling needs to be checked and is probably the easiest
thing you can do. Move the cursor to the top of the document
with the PgUp key. Hit F10 for the main menu, select EZX-Word
3.0, select Spell Check.
The Spell Check will highlight the first word it finds incorrect
and will give you a menu of possible correct words. Pretty nice.
You have the choice to edit the marked word, or to select one of
the possible choices, or you can forget and move on.
It only checks the document beyond the cursor and not any
preceding text. If you want to check the entire document, go to
the beginning first.
This dictionary is powerful and occupies memory only as long as
it is being used.
You will also see the word "Widget" is considered an error.
This happens often with technical or special words and you can
add it to the dictionary, or just move on.
9. PRINTING THE DOCUMENT
The final step is to print your document. All of the changes
are only in memory, so you must first SAVE the document to a
file location.
Hit F10, then select FILE, then select SAVE. If the document is
big, it may take a minute. When "saved", you are ready to
print. Actually, it is a good idea to SAVE your work
periodically as you work so you don't lose it all if there is
big mistake made somehow.
You can also SAVE by hitting Ctrl-KS. This is a lot faster than
the menu.
To print, hit F10, select FILE, then select PRINT. Select PRINT
DOCUMENT NOW if all of the settings you see are correct. You
can change them before you print.
You may find that your choice of margins does not match the
paper width and the results are disappointing. Rather than
reformatting the entire document, realignment of the paper in
the printer is a lot easier. If your choice of margins exceeds
the paper width, you will have to either reformat everything, or
choose a smaller font in the printer, if you can.
10. SUMMARY
Remember to use the HELP key F1!
Move the cursor to where you want to start, before you go to the
menu for choices.
Use either the menu choices, or type the command keys directly.
SAVE your work often; like after each page is done.
